Resolutions or Life Goals

I have been honored with the opportunity to publish my first blog of 2019 on my friend Travis's Blog: Eat or Be Eat'n.

TODAY IS DAY ONE: RESOLUTIONS OR LIFE GOALS?

Who started the annual tradition of New Year’s Resolutions? Does anyone ever follow through with them?
New Year’s Resolutions were started by the Babylonians in around 1900 bc. They made promises to their Gods that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. However, making resolutions in the United States didn’t really take off until the start of the 21st Century.
The month of January is named after Janus, the God of gateways and beginnings thus the term “new beginnings”.
Have you ever stuck to your New Year’s Resolutions? I haven’t. I usually forget my best intentions by February 1st; lose weight, save money, give more money, give more time, eat healthy, etc… Aren’t those really life goals? Goals you and I strive towards to challenge us, inspire us, change us? They are going to take time, practice, perseverance, accountability, will power, -sometimes, it takes more than a year.
As a more practical alternative, I started doing yearly challenges instead; like run a 5k, complete an obstacle course, finish the Tough Mudder, reach out to an old friend, fight my depression, go on a mission trip. I’ve been blessed to have done all that, but that is only the beginning. Will my goals be met in only 12 short months? Nope…not likely.
You can bet your ass I will have blast exploring, adventuring and learning new things about life and about me.
So – Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? Or do you make “Life Goals”?
Today is Day One…now it’s up to you to decide.
